Crystal microdermabrasion facials

Crystal microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic facial procedure. It is an excellent treatment to treat many different types of skin conditions from scarring, acne, melasma and fine lines and wrinkles and uneven skin tone.
It is considered less harsh than other more aggressive facial procedures such as chemical skin peels.

How does crystal microdermabrasion work?

Crystal microdermabrasion works by using a machine which has an aluminium oxide crystal tip through which crystals scan the outer most layer of the skin. The result is an exfoliation of the dead skin layers, deep cleansing of the pores and removal of excess sebum, de-congesting and removal of blackheads and whiteheads as well. The debrie from the outermost layer of the skin and also the contents of the pores which are decongested are removed through the machine using a suction mechanism and cleared on the other end through a filter.  The process overall can reduce pigmentation, scarring, fine lines wrinkles and can also up-regulate the production of collagen and elastin in response to the exfoliation and removal of the outer layer of the dead skin resulting in smoother and more plump and youthful looking skin.
Skin appears  more polished and rejuvenated as well as being more receptive to skincare ingredients.

Who is this procedure Suitable for?

The procedure is suitable for most types of patients.
If you have a compromised immune system, for example, if you suffer with herpes, have an active skin infection, have chicken pox or impetigo you should avoid having this procedure.
In addition any sensitivity to aluminium would be another reason to avoid this procedure and perhaps opt for a different one which does not use this particular component.
We also advise any patients with a sensitive skin barrier or those who suffer from rosacea in particular or telengectasia to avoid micro dermabrasian as it can prove a little bit too aggressive on the outermost  layer of the skin and doesn’t produce any beneficial results. This group of patients may benefit from seeking other available treatments upon consultation.

What is the aftercare?

There is no social downtime as such after a crystal micro dermabrasion
It is recommended to use SPF 50 at all times to protect the skin barrier as it will be more sensitised to the rays of the UVA UVB and HEV after such deep exfoliation
It is also advised to ensure that skin products  like retinol are not applied at least 48 hours afterwards
In addition to this avoidance of saunas, steam rooms, and swimming is also recommended.

How many sessions are needed?

For most beneficial effects it is recommended that at least 6 to 8 sessions are completed at four week intervals.
Upon consultation and exploring your specific targeted skincare concerns and your skin type more specific advice can be given on the exact number of courses that will be required to match your expectations and achieve your goals.
